Myofascial Cupping

How is cupping different from other massage techniques?

Unlike other techniques that use compression, Myofascial Cupping is unique in that it ‘lifts and separates’ soft tissue using negative pressure. This in turn can increase nutrient-rich blood supply to the tissue, while giving a gentle passive stretch to the underlying soft tissue. Myofascial Cupping can provide profound benefits, particularly with assisting the body in maintaining range of motion, eliminating trigger points, and reducing restrictive and sometimes painful fascial adhesions, commonly found from repetitive movement originating from sports and the workplace.

How are cups used?

Myofascial Cupping involves the gliding or stationary placement of negatively pressurized cups on the body. When using the cups in a gliding fashion, lotion is applied to the skin and the cup is used with a gentle suction as the therapist moves the cup over soft tissue. The gliding technique feels very relaxing and rarely leaves marks. It is performed at a pressure level that is painless to the client.

Stationary cups can be used for hypersensitive areas that traditional massage techniques are too painful for. The stationary cups help to desensitize local areas of pain preparing the tissue for deeper pressure.

Marks from stationary cups

In some clients a circular reddish mark will occur and last from 3 to 7 days. This is harmless but a bit unsightly. These marks often occur when an area on the body has stagnant blood flow due to a chronic injury or fascial adhesions. Healthy tissue does not leave a mark in most cases.
